EFFECTIVE LETTER KNOWLEDGE TEACHING

When you implement an alphabet routine in your classroom, make sure you are not chanting, instead just stick to letter names and sounds.

For example, avoid chanting “a", “/a/", "apple".  Instead, 1) teacher points and asks: “name?”  Students respond: “a”.    2) Teacher points and asks: “sound?” Students respond: “/a/".

AN EFFECTIVE LETTER KNOWLEDGE ROUTINE

1.Teacher points and asks “name?” Students respond with the name.

2.Teacher points and asks “sound?” Students respond with the sound.

TEACHING LETTER KNOWLEDGE

Teach the alphabet with explicit and direct teacher language:

“This is the letter___. The letter ___ can say the sound___.”
